The world of travel security is changing a lot these days, and it can be confusing to keep track of all the acronyms and different programs. There are a lot of programs out there that promise to speed up your airport experience, but they all serve different purposes. Let’s take a look at four popular ones and a quick rundown of the most important things you need to know about each program.

TSA Precheck, Clear, and Global Entry are used for skipping ahead in security lines that boarding flights in the USA.  Global Entry and Mobile Passport Control are used to skip long lines when returning to the US and Canada from abroad.

TSA Precheck – $85 for a 5-year membership

TSA Precheck is the easiest way to get through airport security. You can use it whether or not you’re flying internationally.

TSA Precheck is a program run by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that allows certain travelers to pass through security checkpoints without having their belongings inspected. You won’t need to remove your shoes, laptop, or liquids from your luggage.

TSA Precheck – This program allows you to use a fast-track lane at security checkpoints in exchange for an application fee, background check, and in-person interview by an officer. You’ll also have to provide fingerprints and digital photographs of yourself. It’s designed for frequent travelers who have been prescreened by the TSA and determined to be low-risk for terrorism. To apply for TSA Precheck, you must pay an application fee, provide biometric data and pass an in-person interview at one of several hundred enrollment centers around the country.

The process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on how busy your local airport is with this program. Your application will be processed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

TIP:  If you want a faster process, select Staples stores, yes the place where you buy ink, has travel centers that will issue your TSA the same day.

Clear – $189 per year

Using biometric data such as fingerprints or iris scans, passengers who have been approved for Clear can skip the traditional screening process and go directly into a special line where they’ll be screened using advanced body scanners and bomb detection technology. Clear members do not need to show ID or boarding passes.  Clear will get you quickly through the security line.  If you want to expedite the luggage process and not have to remove shoes, laptops, and clear liquids, you will need TSA Precheck. Clear members also receive priority boarding.

Some credit card and airline mileage programs, including Delta Airlines, offer reduced rates or refunding fees when you purchase Clear. Currently, 15 major league baseball stadiums use Clear for expedited entry, however, your bags will still be checked.

Each annual membership allows up to 3 additional persons to join your membership for $50 per person.  Children under 18 years of age can accompany an adult through the Clear screening without charge.

Global Entry – $100 for a 5-year membership

If you fly internationally often enough, it is worth your while to sign up for Global Entry. Global Entry membership includes TSA Precheck. Global Entry can be used to expedite getting through the security process to board flights in the US and for returning through customs.

Global Entry is a trusted traveler program administered by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). It is designed to expedite the customs and immigration process for pre-approved, low-risk travelers when entering the United States.  To apply for Global Entry, you need to complete an online application through the CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs website. The application requires personal information, travel history, and a background check on criminal and immigration history.  If your application is conditionally approved, you will be invited for an in-person interview at a Global Entry enrollment center. During the interview, a CBP officer will verify your information, discuss your application, and take your fingerprints.

Once your interview is successfully completed and your application is approved, you will receive a Global Entry membership card, known as a Trusted Traveler card. The card is valid for five years and contains a unique identification number.

At the airport, Global Entry members can use dedicated kiosks at participating airports. You approach the kiosk, scan your passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place your fingerprints on the scanner, and complete a customs declaration. The kiosk will provide you with a receipt, which you present to the CBP officer along with your Trusted Traveler card.

Global Entry members can bypass regular customs and immigration lines upon entering the United States. They proceed directly to the Global Entry kiosks, scan their passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingerprints on the scanner, and complete a customs declaration.

It’s important to note that while Global Entry expedites the arrival process, it does not guarantee admission into the United States. All travelers are still subject to inspection and must meet the entry requirements.

TIP:  You can apply for your Global Entry Membership at select Staples stores around the country.

Mobile Passport Control – Free

Mobile Passport Control is an app that lets you skip the line at customs when returning from international travel by letting the government scan your passport information beforehand. Mobile Passport Control (MPC) is used to reenter the US and Canada.  Simply download the app, scan your passport, and fill out the appropriate information before landing.  Then proceed to the MPC line upon reentry. You can list all of your family members that are traveling together on the app.  No need for each person to have the app. This is helpful when traveling with minors.

In conclusion, if you travel domestically, TSA Precheck is your best bet, as it is available at more airports than Clear. If you often travel internationally, Global Entry may be worth the membership fee. Happy Travels.
